Introduction
In the standard SAP, towards Optimization of Purchasing activities and to found out a suitable source of supply for a certain material, in addition to vendor and material master data the following types of master data are also maintained:
Purchasing info record Source list Quota arrangement
Source List
If at any point of time, buyer wants to know which vendors or internal suppliers can supply a material over a given period of time then source list is the answer from where he can found out the possible source of supply. As per SAP definition, a source list specifies the possible sources of supply for a material over a given period of time. It shows the time period in which a material may be ordered from a given vendor or under a certain long-term purchase agreement. Here a possible source of supply can be a vendor (external supplier) or an outline agreement or both.

Under source list each source of supply is defined by means of a source list record for a certain plant (organizational level) over a given period of time. Once you have maintained the source list in the system you can use it in the administration of sources of supply.
During maintenance of source list you can define your source of supply as:
Fixed (Allowed) Blocked (Disallowed)
Fixed source of supply are always preferred sources over a certain period of time for a certain plant and blocked sources are disallowed source of a material for a certain plant within a predefined period.
You can have a source of supply as fixed source for a certain plant for a predefined period and at the same time same source can be defined as blocked source for other period for the same plant. A source of supply can also be a fixed source of supply for a certain plant and at the same time it can be blocked for procurement by other plant. You can have only one fixed source for a material within a certain validity period.

So a source list is maintain at plant level for a certain material and it contains the allowed, preferred and/or blocked sources of supply for a material that are valid for a predefined period.
The following are the prerequisite for maintaining a source list:
Plant Material Validity Period Possible sources of supply
